You could make a real difference to a carer in your community.
Do you live in South Gloucestershire?
Are you caring, reliable and responsible?
Carers often find their own health and well-being is affected by the pressure of caring, so having a regular short break can make all the difference. We are looking for people who can offer 2-3 hours of their time each week, during the day to spend with a cared-for person so that the family member who cares for them can take a break.
Local carer Joan has been looking after her husband Sid, who has dementia, since 2010. Through the service, Joan and Sid were provided with a volunteer to help give Joan a break. Joan said:
“At first I was doubtful, but once the sitting sessions started it became a lifesaver. Every week I get 2 whole hours to myself. Time I can spend with friends, go shopping or for walks like I used to.”
Julie has been sitting with Sid for several months and is somebody he looks forward to seeing. She says she benefits immensely from helping Sid and Joan. “We get on really well – he has lots of spirit and makes me laugh. I used to care of my mother and now I have time on my hands and want to give something back.”
If you volunteer you’ll have a comprehensive induction, regular training and support. Travel expenses are paid and volunteers are provided with opportunities for social events and activities. We are looking for men and women to get involved – age is no barrier, as long as you are over 18.
