Caring with Confidence
Wednesdays: 28 June, 5, 12, 19, 26 July, 10.30am-12.30pm, Downend
This course will help carers build a better understanding of what services are out there for them. It aims to increase carers’ confidence in making decisions, working with professionals and getting the practical support they need. It also teaches techniques to deal with stress and emphasises the importance of looking after themselves as a carer.
Alison who attended the course said, “It was great meeting others in similar situations. I feel much more confident as a carer now.”
Caring and Understanding Dementia
Fridays: 29 September, 6, 13, 20, 27 October, 10.30am-12.30pm, East Bristol
Tuesdays: 9, 16, 23, 30 May, 6 June, 6.30-8.30pm, Central Bristol
This course is for anyone caring for someone with dementia and aims to give a better understanding of dementia and its effects. Carers can gain confidence in making decisions about their caring role and managing their own health and wellbeing.
Dan did this course and said, “I enjoyed the tips on every aspect of dementia, meeting other carers, where to get support and advice on communication and dementia.”
First Aid
Wednesday 28 June, 1-3pm, Carers Support Centre
Learn simple first aid skills which could make all the difference in an emergency. Covers common first aid scenarios including what to do if someone is choking, unconscious or bleeding, and how to treat a burn or facture. It will also help participants spot the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke, and give them the tools to step in and act. Run by British Red Cross. “Every aspect of today was useful because every situation was explained clearly with questions answered, reassurance and practical opportunity,” said Jacky who is a carer and benefited from this course.
Thinking in Advance and Planning Ahead
Tuesday 29 September, 10am-12pm, Carers Support Centre
What would happen if the person you care for was no longer able to manage their affairs? Do you know what steps to take? Do you know who to contact? This workshop helps you with these questions and much more. Jane Holzgrawe, specialist legal advisor is facilitating this workshop. She will be helping you to understand a little bit about power of attorney, advance directives and wills.
Assertiveness skills for carers
Tuesday 17 October, 10am-1pm, Carers Support Centre
Carers often find they have to be persistent in getting the support and care they need for the person they care for.
This workshop includes how to talk to professionals, exercising your rights as a carer, and how to express yourself in a calm and positive way.
