Carers Support Centre Bristol and South Gloucestershire welcomed Sir Stephen Timms, Minister of State in the Department for Works and Pensions, on Carers Rights Day, Thursday 21 November, to discuss the vital role of caregivers in our community and the ongoing support services available to them.
During the visit, facilitated by Carers Trust, the Minister engaged in heartfelt conversations with local carers, acknowledging the challenges they face and expressing gratitude for their dedication and selflessness. The event provided a platform for caregivers to share their experiences and offer feedback on current support systems.
“Sir Stephen came to listen and learn from those on the front lines of care,” said Carers Support Centre’s CEO. Carl Tams. “Unpaid carers, often caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental ill-health or substance misuse problems, are the unsung heroes in our society, and we must ensure they have the necessary resources and support to thrive. We are happy that the government has committed to listen to carers to enhance programmes and policies to meet their needs better.”
The discussion highlighted various issues around financial support including Carers Allowance and disability benefits. Attendees had the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggest improvements to existing benefits for carers, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a more supportive environment for caregivers.
At the meeting, the Minister also listened to the Centre’s Carers Support Officers who work on the frontline helping and supporting Bristol and South Gloucestershire’s unpaid carers.
