The awards programme is an opportunity for GP practices in Bristol and South Gloucestershire to work with the Carers Support Centre to look at how carer and dementia friendly your GP surgery is.
A GP carer liaison worker from Carers Support Centre works with the practice to look at the services it provides and how carer-friendly/aware they are. This is scored against agreed criteria, evidencing their commitment to carers, and following successful completion of this audit an award in recognition of this good work is made.
There are three levels of award: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
For example, points are awarded to GP practices which:
- Signposts carers to support.
- Offer flexible appointments for carers and the person they care for.
- Includes questions in health checks to find out whether the patient is a carer.
- Identify carers in medical records.
- Provide carer awareness training to their staff.
This is a fantastic way of looking at the work most of you will be already completing and by evidencing it through the awards programme; it allows the surgery to have regular contact with the liaison worker and the support and information they can provide (including carer awareness training to staff).
At the same time, providing the GP practice with a well-deserved award that can be shown to the CQC and patients, demonstrating their commitment to carers.
